Prilosec and Nexium kidney damage class action lawsuits are still being filed around the country.

Thousands of Proton Pump Inhibitor lawsuits have been filed around the country by plaintiffs who allege that PPI drugs like Nexium and Prilosec caused them to develop permanent kidney damage, bone fractures, and interstitial nephritis. As of August 2023, there are nearly 13,000 Nexium and Prilosec kidney damage lawsuits pending in a class action MDL.  Settlement rumors in this litigation are swirling.

nexium kidney problemsPatients who experience acid indigestion, heartburn or other stomach ailments often seek relief from their symptoms by taking one or more drugs like Nexium.  Many patients have gotten great relief from heartburn and related symptoms, which experience little if any side effects.

Those are the happy ending stories. But new research studies indicate that serious Nexium side effects (including kidney disease) can develop when prescribed or OTC (over-the-counter) heartburn medications are taken in higher doses — or for extended time periods.

Back in the 1980s when drugs like Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid were first marketed in the United States, many physicians believed they could benefit their patients because the risk of using the was outweighed by the benefits.  Growing scientific literature, including new studies published in 2016 in JAMA Internal Medicine and the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, question that assumption. March 6, 2023 Update

We were supposed to get our first bellwether trial this month in the Nexium PPI kidney damage class action. That trial has now been pushed back to June 5, 2023. The second and third bellwether trials will follow in July and September. This is the second postponement of the Nexium bellwether trials and there is speculation that the most recent postponement is a sign that the parties are very close to inking a global settlement agreement.
